Asus Zenbook Pro UX501: Not Quite MacBook Pro Killer, But Close To It

Written by Maanasi

Asus, once known for making top notch graphic cards and PC motherboards, is diversifying into newer hardware territories. While its Zenfone line-up is giving giants like Samsung and Lenovo a run for their money, Asus is also focusing on the high end ultrabook segment. Its Zenbook series of laptops are aimed at various segments with the latest Pro UX501J squarely meant for the venerable Apple MacBook Pro. You know, challenging the MacBook pro is no easy task and many have tried it with varying results! I feel Asus has got pretty close with the Pro UX501J.

Classy Design and Build

The Asus Zenbook Pro UX501J is a premium offering meant for power laptop users seeking uncompromised performance, stellar looks and matching features. The laptop packs in enough bells and whistles. You get a solidly built, classy aluminium body. The beveled edges and brushed-metal, dark-grey body of the Zenbook Pro UX501J makes it look both aesthetic and classy. The device also stands out owing to its concentric-circle speaker grill atop the keyboard. I found the overall build quality good with hinges operating smoothly and screen having nearly no flex. It is heavier than the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Awesome but glossy display, immersive sound

If I was to pick the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501J over Apple’s contender for one major reason, it would be the awesome and beautiful display! The laptop’s dazzling 4K UHD display makes watching movies or using media apps truly enjoyable experience. However, the glossy nature results in reflections, which you will find distracting. Besides, such a high res display also taxes the Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU heavily. This IPS multitouch display races ahead of most rivals, including the MacBook Pro’s Retina display. Asus packs in its proprietary Splendid Technology program to tweak display settings.

The speakers produce crisp and powerful sound output. They sport Bang & Olufsen technology and fit the bill for music payback and movie watching rather well. There is the Audio wizard utility with various sound modes too.

Impressive spec, fast performance

Make no mistake, the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501J will satisfy the geeks craving for a laptop with killer specs. It’s fitted with powerful hardware like an Intel Core i7-4720HQ CPU, 16 GB RAM and a 512 MB SSD. As expected, it aced all the benchmark tests I threw at it, beating most of the competition steadily and coming very close to the MacBook pro. Playing BioShock, while keeping various tabs open in Chrome and running antivirus scan caused no slowdown. It trounced rivals like Aspire V15 Nitro and Dell Inspiron 15 in file copying speed.

Ports, connectivity and battery life

I expect an ultrabook category laptop to come with every single port and connectivity options I want. The Asus Zenbook Pro UX501J scores well, except for a few hiccups. The USB 3.0 port and Thunderbolt 2.0 ports are useful. However, packing in just a 1 MP webcam in such a nice laptop is odd. In battery life, it sits in the middle of the pack. You can expect more than 4 hours under normal usage-indicating it falls behind the MacBook Pro in this segment.

Should you buy it?

Now that you know what the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501J offers- should you buy it? I guess the answer would be yes, except for the hardcore Apple fan boys! You get good value for your money- it is $1,000 cheaper than what the MacBook Pro will cost you. The Zenbook Pro UX501J aces at nearly everything- gaming, movies and web browsing- matching and beating the rivals. Yes, there are a few hiccups like average quality webcam and Windows 8.1. These however, are not deal breakers given Microsoft is now offering free upgrade to Windows 10.
