For many people, winter is their favourite time of the year when the outdoors beckons invitingly as it turns into a ‘winter wonderland’- straight from the lyrics of a beautiful Christmas carol. There are so many exciting things to do when it snows like skiing, snowboarding and sledding- to name but a few.

It becomes really difficult to just stay indoors when all these attractions are around and more often than not, you will find yourself putting on a coat and heading outdoors. There are innumerable articles which will tell you the basics of staying safe in winter.

Here are some tips you may not have known about:

Layer Up- Most people have the misconception that bundling up in a nice thick coat will keep them warm when they head outdoors. But, this is not true! It’s actually better to just put on as many layers of clothing as possible under a snowsuit like a few sweaters over a turtleneck, a thick woollen scarf and a pair of sweatpants. Make sure the snowsuit, you’re wearing is water-resistant. Also, try to wear clothing made from wool or fleece instead of cotton because cotton absorbs water and will make you feel colder.

Eat Up- If you tend to consume a lot warm liquid drinks, remember that they don’t really give the body any extra energy. Instead, you should snack on calorie-rich foods as these will make you feel more energetic, especially when it’s cold outside. Look to consume dried fruits, macadamia nuts, almonds, goat cheese, pasta, peanut butter, whole wheat bread, salad dressings, bacon, salmon, beef, brown rice and dates. These are high in calorie and will help your body stay warm in the cold winters.

Always cover your hands- Many of you may choose to walk outdoors with your hands bare because you just don’t want to wear non-stylish thick woollen mittens. Try gloves instead. They’re fashionable as well as good for surviving the winter weather. When your fingers touch each other inside the glove, they are able to generate a lot of body heat.

Keep yourself hydrated- A lot of people think it is only necessary to stay hydrated in summer because you tend to sweat a lot then. But, it is equally important in winter as well! During winter, illnesses tend to spread around quickly and if you drink a lot of healthy liquids, it can help you to fight off winter illnesses like common cold faster.

Warm Up- Make sure you warm up before engaging in any outdoor physical activities. Do a few warm up exercises to get your blood flowing and to stretch your muscles. This will help you to work more efficiently than otherwise and it will also lessen the chances of you injuring your muscles.

Use Sunscreen- While the winter sun doesn’t feel as harsh as the summer sun, don’t be fooled! It’s quite possible to get sun burnt in winter as the snow reflects the sun’s rays (up to 85%) and this makes it dangerous. Slather any exposed body parts with sunscreen about half an hour before you head out.

There are also a lot of products that you can buy which will help you to fight off winter infections and stay safe this winter. Try browsing through the many products available on The Glove Club website that has everything you need to stay snug, safe and warm in winter.

Follow these helpful tips and you will be able to brave the harsh weather and happily wander off to your favourite café to bask in the warmth and enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate.
